RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
