Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
